Rosa mosqueta, sweetbriar or Chilean wild rosehip, belongs to the wild rose family which numbers over 100 species. It inhabits the wild slopes of the Andes, and is another proof of how something most beautiful can flourish even in the harshest of conditions. In addition to its beauty, this plant has many useful properties. In Chile, it has been used for centuries for skin care and treatment and is known as the “fruit of eternal youth”, precisely because it has an extraordinary power to heal and regenerate the skin.

Its most therapeutic properties are found in unsaturated fatty acids: oleic, linolenic, linoleic and retinoic. Retinoic acid is the metabolite of vitamin A. In patients who applied rose oil twice a day, significant differences were observed compared to the control group, not only in the healing and the reduction of scars, but also in erythema – skin redness. Improvements in skin atrophy, scar colour and levels of skin inflammation have also been reported. The conclusion of the study is that high levels of unsaturated fatty acids, primarily linoleic and oleic acids, as well as carotenoids and polyphenols which have a strong antioxidant action, speed up the healing process, especially when the oil is applied at an early stage. Chilean wild rosehip oil can even be applied to open wounds, which has been studied and proven, although serious wounds require expert intervention. When it comes to skin atrophy, retinoic acid is considered to be the substance that tones the skin, which is why it is often used in dermatology, both for skin affected by acne and for injuries. Retinoic acid plays a key role in rejuvenating the skin, repairing the harmful effects of UV radiation on the skin and strengthening the skin’s immunity.
