Herb Robert

(Geranium robertianum)

There is an element which is known to have extraordinary powers. Germanium stimulates the body’s immune response, it prevents the effects of free radicals, transmits oxygen – thus nourishing the cells and increases the levels of interferons which stimulate anti-bodies. Germanium is a super-hero which protects our body from bacteria, viruses and tumours. After he had discovered that cancer cells could not survive in fully-oxygenated environments, only in the anaerobic state, double Nobel laureate Dr Otto Warburg said that the main cause of cancer is the lack of oxygen in cells. And it is precisely germanium that showers the cells with oxygen. It is this mineral that brings us energy, vitality, immunity and restores balance. Germanium is found in nature, in some mushrooms (e.g. shiitake), in ginseng, garlic and in one exceptional medicinal plant – herb robert.

Herb robert, Geranium robertianum, known in the West as Robert, was named after a monk who lived in the 13th century and who used this plant to heal many people. Throughout history it has been the symbol of happiness and was frequently depicted next to storks, as a symbol of fertility. This low-growing plant with small pretty pink flowers grows throughout Europe and was subsequently taken to America. Its reproductive process is very interesting: when it flowers it produces seed pods which break, suddenly spreading seeds in a five-metre radius. This inspired many folk stories and fairy tales, one of which was even embodied in the character of Puck in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream.

In a sea of medicinal plants, herb robert is often overlooked, which is a pity as it can prevent the emergence and development of cancer. This exceptional plant has strong antioxidant properties thanks to the already mentioned germanium and ellagic acid which has been proven to slow the growth of tumour cells and prevent cancer. Ellagic acid is a polyphenol from the group of ellagitannins, and is also found in pomegranate, berries, nuts and mushrooms. Clinical studies have proven its strong anti-tumor properties. Ellagic acid penetrates into tumour cells and causes their apoptosis (programmed cell death), breaks down the DNA bound to cancer cells and blocks viral infections. In addition to preventing or slowing the growth of tumours, it increases tumour sensitivity to standard therapy – chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Research has shown its effectiveness in a number of cancers: breast, pancreas, prostate, ovary, nasopharyngeal cancer, osteogenic sarcoma and lymphoma.

Among the many polyphenols found in herb robert are phenolic components such as stilbenes and lignans which bind to oestrogen receptors – something especially important to women, both in the reproductive period and in perimenopause. Herb robert is therefore great for regulating the menstrual cycle, preventing ovarian inflammation, and is an excellent fighter against infertility in both sexes. It regulates the secretion of sex hormones, improves the patency of the fallopian tubes and strengthens reproductive health. Ellagic acid protects reproductive organs from malignant cells and has been proven to prevent uterine cancer. Herb robert contains bitter compounds – tannins that have the power to curb heavy bleeding, which is helpful for heavy cycles or for bleeding wounds. When it comes to the latter, its exceptional antibiotic and antibacterial powers help with open wounds, cracked ulcers, internal bleeding and nosebleeds. Herb robert has been proven to destroy Staphylococcus aureus, S. pseudintermedius, Streptococcus agalactiae, S. canis, Bacillus subtilis B. cereus, Aspergillus fumigatus, Micrococcus flavus, Escherichia coli

Herb robert has long been used in folk medicine to treat a number of ailments: bile disorders, problems with digestive organs, kidney inflammation, diabetes, diarrhoea, gastritis, sinus problems; it has also been used for the treatment of high blood pressure, respiratory disorders, inflammation of the mucous membranes in the mouth, tonsils and wounds, to strengthen immunity and the nervous system. Most of these uses have been scientifically proven. With its anti-inflammatory effect, herb robert soothes swellings of mucous membranes; research has shown that it definitely has anti-diabetic properties, that it lowers blood glucose levels and improves liver function. This medicinal plant also has antihypertensive, astringent, anti-haemorrhagic, diuretic, emollient, depurative and toning properties. By strengthening the whole body and immunity, herb robert also preserves mental health, it reduces irritability and anxiety, prevents exhaustion, insomnia and chronic fatigue. As a great purgative, it cleanses the body, which can be seen on our skin as it eliminates acne and prevents other skin disorders.

When something is so healthy it should be used a lot. It can be eaten, fresh in salads and be added to stews. In its dry form it can be used in delicious herbal infusions, it is available in the form of herbal drops and essential oil and is excellent in combination with other herbs. A powerful scent of a freshly picked plant rubbed into the skin repels mosquitos. This is such a small plant that has so many uses and positive effects…Herb robert is a very persistent weed – you can try to cut it and remove it, it always comes back. Maybe its persistence has a deeper message for us. That is why herb robert is an inevitable ingredient of Femisan A.
